October 3 is Gaecheonjeol(개천절, National Foundation Day of Korea), a national holiday commemorating the founding of Gojoseon(古朝鮮), the first Korean kingdom, traditionally attributed to Dangun Wanggeom(檀君王儉).
The word “Gaecheon(開天)” literally means “the opening of heaven.” According to Korea’s traditional founding narrative, Hwanung descended from heaven to the sacred tree on Mount Taebaek, and Dangun later founded Gojoseon in 2333 B.C.
Gaecheonjeol was traditionally observed on the third day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar. Following the enactment of Korea’s law concerning national holidays in 1949, October 3 on the solar calendar was officially designated as National Foundation Day and has been observed on this date ever since.

Today, October 3, marks Gaecheonjeol, the 4,358th year of the Dangun Era (Dangi, 檀紀), and a national holiday of the Republic of Korea.
On this meaningful day, the Taegeukgi(太極旗), the national flag of the Republic of Korea, is proudly displayed throughout the country.
We sincerely wish you a meaningful Gaecheonjeol and hope this special day brings peace, happiness, and friendship to everyone.
With Warmest Regards from Korea.
